25 OHLers named to Canadian U-17 Rosters

The Canadian rosters for the World Under 17 Championships were announced on Monday, with 25 players named to the three Canadian rosters, 16 of whom were selected in the first round of the past OHL draft. Canadian players are dispersed between three teams, Canada Black, Canada Red and Canada White.

The Canada Black roster will feature reigning #1 pick David Levin. The Sudbury forward has been given a lot of responsibility as the centrepiece on a rebuilding team, but has tied for his team’s lead in goals. Canada Black also features three more players selected in the Top 10 of the past OHL draft in Saginaw’s Brady Gilmour, Niagara’s Ben Jones and Hamilton’s Matthew Strome.

Canada Red will be strong in net, with Michael DiPietro proving to be more than capable against the OHL’s best scorers. The Windsor rookie has opened up his season with a 4-0 record, and only allowing six goals on his first 129 shots. The team will have two players picked in the top 10 of the OHL draft in Peterborough forward Zach Gallant and Owen Sound defenceman Markus Phillips.

There are 10 different OHLers on Canada White, led by #2 pick in the OHL draft Gabe Vilardi. Vilardi’s been everything Windsor could ask for in to start the season, posting eight points in his first ten games to lead all 2015 OHL draft picks in scoring. He’ll be joined by fellow top 5 picks and Mississauga teammates Ryan McLeod and Owen Tippett.
