The Kingston Frontenacs were up against more than just the Oshawa Generals. They were going to have to defeat history to move on to the second round. A history of playoff misery, that goes as far back as 1998, the last time the Frontenacs won a playoff series. While the Frontenacs were clear favorites, this series was about more then simply advancing to the second round; it was about peeling the monkey off of their backs.

The first two games of the series went easily enough, with Kingston trouncing Oshawa both times, but faced a sterner test when the series was headed back to the Gen’s home rink. Game 3 had the Generals firing on all cylinders, playing the Fronts to a tie heading into the second intermission. Then, 16 seconds into the third frame, Anthony Cirelli scored to give the Generals a 3-2 lead. The Fronts answered back with two of their own, but Oshawa again tied the game with five minutes remaining. Then, something that hadn’t happened to the Fronts in a long time, happened; they came through in the clutch. with mere seconds on the clock, former General Michael Dal Colle scored, securing a 5-4 victory.

Game 4 would also go down to the wire, with Oshawa refusing to go away quietly. With their playoff lives on the line, Jeremy Brodeur stood on his head for Oshawa, making 43 saves, and giving the Generals a chance in a game they would go on to win in overtime, 4-3. Unfortunately, that was the last gasp for the Generals, as they went back to Kingston, losing 6-0, and giving Kingston the 4-1 series win.
