The Oshawa Generals gave up a significant amount of draft picks to land Philip Tomasino from the Niagara IceDogs.

The Generals are sending nine draft picks, including six second round picks, to the IceDogs.

But as a 2001-born forward, it is very likely Oshawa will get a year and a half of service before Tomasino graduates to the pro ranks.

“It’s a big deal for us to be adding a talent like Philip to our line-up,” said Vice-President and General Manager Roger Hunt on acquiring the NHL first rounder.

“Adding a player like him obviously comes at a cost, but getting him in our line-up was something we wanted that will be a great addition now and in the future.”

On top of the nine draft picks, Niagara also received the rights to unsigned defencemen David Gucciardi, who is currently playing with the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers.

It’s been a busy week for both teams, as the IceDogs’ also parted ways with their captain, sending Akil Thomas to Peterborough.

Oshawa made a deal with Kitchener, sending forward Serron Noel to the Rangers for forward Ryan Stepien and four draft picks.
